1. Linking words.

Sentences and paragraphs need linking words to help the reader understand the structure of the argument. For example:

First, ... Second, ... Finally, ...                express a sequence

Moreover, ... / In addition to this, ...       adding another, related idea

However, ... / On the other hand, ...       make a contrast

... due to ... / Therefore, ...                   express cause and result

2. Formal language.

Most business writing is neutral and direct rather than formal. Three areas of grammar are useful when a more formal, impersonal style is needed. They are:

The passive:             A decision is expected by the end of the year.

'If + passive:            It is recommended that we reduce the travel allowance budget by 10%.

Compound nouns:    A planning meeting;   a production planning meeting.

3. Informal Language.

Contractions like It's, we'll, there's and words and phrases typical of informal speech like big, OK, nice, no way, fantastic should not appear in reports.

Leaving a voicemail

Hints on voicemail organization:

  • ·     Top down not bottom up e.g., give the main message but don’t supply all the details.
  • ·     Content not process.
  • ·     Synthesis not summary e.g., state what the message is and the actions you’d like the other person to take.

Tips on leaving a voicemail:

  • ·         No longer than 60 seconds.
  • ·         Summarize the purpose of your message in a sentence or two.
  • ·         Give your name and telephone number early in the message.
  • ·         Speak slowly and distinctly.
  • ·         Give the recipient enough information to act.
  • ·         Say when you will be able to receive a return call.

Leaving a message in your own voicemail:

  • ·         Give your name clearly.
  • ·         Say when you will be available to receive a call.
  • ·         Do not say ‘speak after the tone’.
  • ·         Do not say ‘you have reached the voicemail of ...’ – we all have enough experience of using the telephone and leaving messages!

Expressions you can use when you leave a voicemail:

  • Starting the message:    "Hello, this is ............."
  • Saying the day/time you are leaving the message:           "It’s Tuesday June 10 It’s 10 a.m."
  • Giving the reason for your call:                  "I urgently need to talk to you about ............."
  • Leaving your number:                   "Please call me back on ............. I will be in the office until ............."

We use prepositions of time to talk about days, months, and years.

On is used with days and dates.

In is used with parts of a day, months, years, and longer periods of time.

At is used with time.

These are some examples:

ON: on Monday, on June 3rd, on my birthday, on Saturday night, on the weekend.

IN: in October,  in 2013, in (the) summer, in the 21st century, * in the morning

AT: at night,  at 1:15, at dinner time, at midnight, at 6:00 pm.

I have a meeting on today.    I have a meeting today.

I didn't go to work on yesterday.     I didn't go to work yesterday.

We also usually don't use prepositions of time with "this," "next," "last," and "every."

We use prepositions with places. There are many prepositions of place, but let's look at three: on, at, and in.

We use on for streets and specific locations

 on Main Street : The office is on Main Street. 

on the street : There is a newspaper stand on the street. 

on the corner : Let's meet on the corner.

We use at with addresses and buildings where something happens.

 at my boss's house : There is a party at my boss's house. 

at the train station : There are many people at the train station. 

at (address) : My client's office is at 200 E. Silver Street.

We use in with cities, countries, and large places

 in Chicago : I live in Chicago. 

in the park : I jog in the park every day. 

in the mountains : I go camping in the mountains.

We can also use in to mean inside a building or a room. For example:

 I am in the restaurant. = I am inside the restaurant. 

The meeting is in Room Four. = The meeting is inside Room Four. 

He is in the hotel room. = He is inside the hotel room.

Marcas, sientes tu cara caliente, empieza a sonar, tú empiezas a sudar. Te contestan:

-“Thank you for calling Business Connection. Haley speaking. How can I help you?”

TOEFL iBT: Test Of English as a Foreign Language. Internet Based Test. Generalmente para propósitos académicos.

TOEIC: Test Of English for International Communication. Generalmente para propósitos laborales.

IELTS: International English Language Testing System.
